Plans for the new council offices at the Covent Garden carpark
Plans for the new council offices at the Covent Garden carpark

Warwick and Leamington Labour Party and Matt Western MP are opposing Warwick District Council’s proposals to sell off their Riverside House site for exclusive use of private housing and knock down Covent Garden Car Park to build new offices.

The complete absence of affordable housing in their plans is scandalous. The cost of the project in a time of austerity makes it totally unjustifiable. 800 people rely on Covent Garden Car Park per day. Half of those who use it do so to shop in Leamington Town Centre, while up to 35% are shoppers are from Coventry. The loss of 800 people a day not coming to Leamington will seriously undermine the viability of many Leamington Town Centre businesses.

The plans also mean the loss of 36 parent and child carparking spaces in the town centre, which will limit the accessibility our of town centre to young families.

Due to the loss of Covent Garden and a lack of replacement spaces there, Warwick District Council recently proposed to use Christchurch Gardens and the tennis courts as a car par. Due to pressure from Labour District councillors and the hard work of the community, we were able to defeat those plans. However, they still want to use Victoria Park for parking and have rejected the Labour Plan for extra capacity at Chandos street, which received the backing of local business groups.

Matt Western MP has launched a petition which now has 3500 signatures against the plans and is working hard across the community to halt this project.
